Trail of Lights Mildura + Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra Wentworth
Bruce Munro's Trail of Lights in Mildura and Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra in Wentworth form a two-part after-dark art experience spanning the Murray River and Perry Sandhills.
Trail of Lights and FOSO
Two large-scale light installations by British-Australian artist Bruce Munro are now operating across Mildura and Wentworth, giving visitors two contrasting ways to experience his work after dark.
Trail of Lights is set on Lock Island beside the Murray River in Mildura. The walking installation combines 12,500 firefly lights with Munro's Gone Fishing sculptures, using the island's trees, river setting and changing evening light as part of the work.
The experience begins at Rio Vista Park, where visitors check in before crossing to Lock Island. Trail of Lights is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. During the summer season from October to March, gates and the TOL Bar operate from 7pm to 10pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Optional semi-guided walks depart at 8pm, 8.30pm, 9pm and 9.30pm.
During the April to September winter season, Trail of Lights operates from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, with semi-guided walks at 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm. Opening hours can change because of weather or operational requirements.
Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra - Wentworth
About 30 kilometres away in Wentworth, Munro's Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra, or FOSO, takes the idea in a more theatrical direction. The installation opened in April 2026 on Log Bridge Road, with the Perry Sandhills and Thegoa Lagoon forming the surrounding landscape.
FOSO uses 80 illuminated structures based on the familiar Hills Hoist clothesline, arranged to evoke the layout of an orchestra. Cylindrical arrays of fibre optics turn each structure into a column of coloured light, with the installation changing in time with an original orchestral score by Emmy Award-winning composer Nainita Desai.
FOSO is open Thursday and Saturday. Summer hours from October to March are 7pm to 10.30pm, while April to September winter hours are 5.30pm to 9pm. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Visitors explore the installation at their own pace rather than following a guided tour.
Bruce Munro
Munro is best known in Australia for Field of Light at Uluru, where thousands of illuminated stems spread across the desert landscape. His Mildura and Wentworth works continue his practice of using large numbers of individual light sources to create installations shaped by their surroundings.
The two works are deliberately different. Trail of Lights is a quieter riverside walk, while FOSO combines light with music on a much larger open site. Tickets can be purchased separately, while a Dual Experience ticket covers both installations across two nights.
Current listed prices for the Dual Experience are $55 for adults, $25 for children aged four to 16, $35 concession and $120 for a family of two adults and two children. Infants aged zero to three are free. Individual admission to either Trail of Lights or FOSO is $35 adult, $15 child and $22 concession, with family tickets priced at $85.
