Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Dame Elisabeth Murdoch

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch is a remarkable woman and will always remain our greatest Melburnian.

She was born Elisabeth Joy Greene on February 8, 1909 in Armadale, educated at St Catherine's School in Toorak, and later at Clyde School in Woodend. On 5 December 2012, she died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 103.

Dame Elisabeth's upbringing taught her to love gardens and the land, because as a young wife and mother of four she found herself running two large gardens in city and country. Neither had a good water supply so she would wake at dawn - a habit that has never left her - to pump water and shift hoses. Or she would do this at dusk after a day's work in the city.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch is Patron of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and a life governor of the Royal Women's Hospital. She supports 110 charitable organisations annually.

Apart from international media proprietor Rupert Murdoch, her children are Janet Calvert-Jones, Anne Kantor and Helen Handbury (1929-2004).

Spouse: Keith Murdoch (m. 1928-1952)
