The Capitol

The Capitol The Capitol

The Capitol theatre is one of the world's most iconic cinemas, possessing all the charm, hypnotic charisma and commanding authority that Fellini had thought was lost from the cinema-going experience.

The Capitol delivers old world charm to film festivals and special events.

The Capitol Theatre in Melbourne is a classic Art Deco theatre and the first picture palace (theatre) to be built in Australia. Designed by Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin it is one of the world's most beautiful cinemas.

The cinema opened in 1924 with the lighting used in conjunction with the orchestral scores during the early silent film era. It added drama for the film goer, and remains a spectacular sight today.

RMIT University's The Capitol is located in Capitol Arcade in Swanston Street, Melbourne (opposite Town Hall).
