Quambi Stadium - Kyneton Quambi Stadium - Kyneton

Quambi Stadium is the multi-purpose indoor stadium at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton, Victoria. Since opening in 1981, it has served as the heart of the college community, hosting school assemblies, Masses, sporting events, performances and a wide range of community gatherings. It remains one of the college's most recognisable facilities.

A gathering place at the heart of the college

Quambi Stadium was built in 1981 to provide Sacred Heart College with a large indoor venue capable of bringing the entire school community together. Before its construction, the college lacked a dedicated space for whole-school events and indoor sporting activities.

The name "Quambi" was chosen because it was believed to mean "gathering place" when the building opened, reflecting its role as the centre of college life. The venue quickly became home to school Masses, assemblies, indoor sport and community celebrations, while also hosting the college's Debutante Ball during its early years.

An important part of Sacred Heart College's growth

The construction of Quambi coincided with a period of significant expansion at Sacred Heart College. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, enrolments increased following the return of Higher School Certificate classes and the school's transition to co-education.

Quambi formed part of a broader building program that included new science laboratories, classrooms and sporting facilities. The stadium officially opened on 8 December 1981 and became a central feature of the developing campus.

More than a sports stadium

Although designed to support indoor physical education and sporting competitions, Quambi has always had a broader purpose. It functions as the college's principal gathering space for liturgical celebrations, awards ceremonies, cultural performances, guest presentations and community events.

The stadium regularly hosts whole-school activities that bring together students, staff, families and visitors throughout the year, reinforcing its role as the social and spiritual centre of the college.

Continuing significance

In recent years the college has reaffirmed the importance of Quambi through the installation of new signage and artwork recognising both the Mercy tradition of the school and its commitment to acknowledging First Nations cultures.

The renewed interpretation of the name reflects the college's desire to honour the original intention behind the stadium's naming while recognising contemporary understandings of Indigenous languages and cultural heritage. Quambi continues to represent a place where the Sacred Heart College community gathers to celebrate, reflect, compete and learn together.
